Welcome to pulse — a space designed to help you slow down, reconnect, and move with intention.
More than just a wellness studio, pulse is a calm and thoughtful response to the pressures of modern life — a place where mindfulness, movement and community come together. Created through adaptive reuse of existing architecture, it offers a new kind of wellness experience in the heart of Burwood.
pulse is also part of a bigger picture. As the local lifestyle shifts beyond the traditional 9-to-5, the studio plays a key role in supporting Burwood After Dark — staying open and active well into the evening and early morning hours. With flexible, multi-use zones, the space invites students, shift workers and late-night locals to reset, recharge and take time for themselves, no matter the hour.
From yoga and pilates to meditation pods and warm, ambient design, every detail of pulse encourages a slower, more connected way of being. This is a place to move, to rest, and to feel better — whenever you need it.
SITE ANALYSIS

An analysis of the Burwood LGA highlights the lack of spaces that adequately meet the needs of the wellness niche that balance both physical and mental health in the same space.

Travel Distance
Through an investigation of the housing regions in the immediate vicinity near the site of Elsie Street, this provides us with clear potential for success for a 24/7 space that can be activated across both day and night; notably considering the fact of the increase of the working population which works outside of the 9am-5pm traditional window.

A spatial focal point that takes on an abstract form, detached from surroundings to distinguish a relaxing space that is separated from the working sector.
Material and Immaterial

The material choices leverage considered immaterial components like light and water to curate distinct yet harmonious atmospheres that inspire productivity on a social and working level.
MATERIAL RE-USE
The Circular Pavillion
ENCORE HEUREUX Architectes - Paris, France
Modular / Open Approach

Arrangement of materials in ways that serve both aesthetic and functional purposes. Flexibility; allowing modifications and the dismantling of spatial elements where needed. Materials that serve as multipurposeful: e.g. timber for cladding, structure etc.
Unconventional Material Use
Circular Economy Approach

The intended use of a ‘door’ has broken free from its traditional form and use. Using the materials properties, such as coating etc..it has been reused for cladding and as windows. Creating multiple reuse options from one defiant ‘material’.
Each layer of the building is made from materials that were waste products from various projects. Materials can then be repurposed and reprocessed following the life cycle of the pavilion.

Integration of Technology

Dynamic, sustainable and flexible spaces that are designed to respond to the needs of multiple groups. These spaces are easily adaptable and can take on changing social needs.
Buildings that are demountable and act as sites which promote public life in areas where the surrounding urban environment needs to be improved.
Using technology as a medium to enhance the social qualities of space; empowering users to become active participants in the space rather than passive observers.
